What to see?
Kua Ruins

The mosques date back to the 14th Century while the grand old house that is the most prominent structure is from the 18th Century. In 1829 the town was sacked by Sakalava cannibals from Madagascar and was then abandoned. The trip to the ruins is very enjoyable as the visitor crosses the Bay and will see many of the ocean and shorebirds.
Ras Mkumbi lighthouse
The lighthouse can be reached by a car-journey taking you right across the island and its changing landscape. Wide stretches of savannah studded by baobab trees, small seaside villages, bush populated by monkeys and birds climax in a unique view of the open sea. You can go right to the top of the lighthouse, which is still operating, for an all-round view.

Islands around Mafia
Juani Island

Juani has a number of villages and is extensively cultivated. On the ocean side there are three beaches important as turtle nesting sites. The island's fauna is quite unusual and includes wild pigs, monkeys and small antelopes (blue duiker). Inland there is a series of ancient coral rock pools that make a very good nature walk. Most of the inhabitants combine fishing and farming.

Jibondo
The island of Jibondo is at about an hour's boat-trip from Utende and is characterised by the unique conformation of the western tip and the surrounding emerald-green waters. The village is mainly inhabited by fishermen whose fish and octopus drying and net-mending activities are of great interest to tourists together with the traditional shipyard, one of the most famous in Tanzania.
Bwejuu
This is the long narrow island on the western side of Mafia, between the main island and the Rufiji Delta. Considered by many to be the most beautiful island in the archipelago thanks to its position and its sandy banks. Bwejuu is less than two kilometres long and no more than two hundred metres wide at its widest point. Bwejuu is surrounded by white sandy beaches, a palm-fringed shore and coral reefs. A small traditional fishing community lives on the island.
Chole Island
The island is very attractive for the traditional village life which visitors are welcome to see, its boat-building, sail-making, hand-manufacture of coconut coir rope, the roosts of the giant fruit bat, and the lush vegetation with baobabs, native Albizia and fruit trees.
