| Chole Mjini Island Lodge (Intermediate) |
Imagine tree houses built into baobab trees, with four poster beds inside, surrounded by tropical vegetation and ancient Shirazi and Omani ruins, on a tiny tropical island off the coast of Africa.
This lodge more than any other is like a bush camp by the sea - a true escape from the world. If you are looking for a relaxed atmosphere in a gorgeous position, and don't need modern-day 'necessities' such as hairdryers and flush toilets, you will adore this rustic lodge.
With 6 magnificent tree houses and a luxurious terrestrial suite are set amongst the baobabs and oriented to catch the sea breezes. Rugged adventure tempered with casual luxury, each house, high in the canopy has at least one double bed made with Egyptian cotton, a shower and loo. The ‘Groundhouse’ which is the only floor unit has a sunken Persian bath, in addition. No electricity adds to the natural charm although one can still expect ice-cold drinks and there is a battery charging facility.
Treehouse 1 - The first built and a real favourite, this treehouse is constructed around a huge baobab tree. Elegant and simple, it consists of a rectangular platform with a roof and a nice big bed.
Treehouse 2 - This treehouse is also built around a huge baobab tree and features a viewing platform, reached by step ladder from the bedroom, which is great for watching the birds come home to roost in the early evening.
Treehouse 3 - This one is not so impressive when you first approach it because it appears to not be very high off the ground, but it is actually built up on the rocks above the mangroves and has an outside platform for lounging. The bed is suspended from the ceiling on ropes, which means it can swing.
Treehouse 4 - This room is right at the far end of the grove and has superb views from its upstairs viewing platform, across the mangroves and Chole Bay to the Coast of Mafia Island and the open ocean.
Treehouse 5 - A freestanding room (i.e. without the tree), which is constructed next to some interesting Shirazi ruins. Set back a bit from the sea.
Treehouse 6 - This is the latest and the best room. Set out in the mangroves above the water.
Groundroom - This room is considerably different from all the other rooms, being ground-based and therefore a lot more conventional. It makes up for this with a magnificent bed and a huge sunken bath.
The bathrooms take the form of large outdoor bamboo-lined bathroom areas, on the ground adjacent to the tree houses. The toilets are composting toilets, essentially 'modified long drops', but are clean and do not smell. The shower is a real Heath-Robinson affair, which involves the lighting of a paraffin wick in a sheath around the water pipe. Flames heat the water directly, giving a good hot shower. All this takes place in the great outdoors and adds up to about the best bathroom experience you’ll ever have.
Meals are taken overlooking the small harbour - seafood, fruit and vegetables - and the bar is upstairs with sweeping views of Chole Bay below which a lounge, full of games, magazines and reference books is the perfect place to relax.
